About this resource
This is an independent revision companion and mock-examination trainer for the NPPF Step Two Legal Examination (Sergeant's and Inspector's papers, formerly OSPRE Part 1), built around the official 2026 syllabus published by the College of Policing.
How the mock exams work
- Blueprint sampling. Questions are drawn across the three examinable volumes in roughly exam proportions (Crime ≈ 36%, Evidence & Procedure ≈ 30%, General Police Duties ≈ 34%), so no two papers look the same.
- Variants. Where a topic has alternate phrasings, a random one is chosen each sitting — the same subject, a different question.
- Shuffled options. The correct answer is not always in the same position.
- Marking. Absolute 55% pass mark, matching the real sergeants' paper (the inspectors' paper is marked at 65%).
- Feedback. Worked answers, a per-volume breakdown, and a running tally of your weakest topics.
How the questions are written
The questions here follow the style of the NPPF/OSPRE paper. That means:
- Short, precise stems — either a direct legal question (“Under s.24 PACE, a constable may arrest without warrant where…”) or a brief scenario (“Two men plan a burglary together, but one also assaults the occupier…”).
- Statutory references in the stem where the real paper uses them, and four short, parallel options (A–D) with close distractors.
- The ‘which is NOT / EXCEPT’ format where it’s genuinely the clearest way to test the point.
- No trick wording — the difficulty is in the law, not the English.
Honest limits
- The only officially endorsed material is the 2026 edition of the Blackstone's Police Manuals. Exam questions are drawn solely from those; this site is not affiliated with the College of Policing or with OUP.
- Notes and questions here are original, written in the style of the exam. They are a revision aid, not a substitute for reading the manuals.
- Law changes. Always check the current manuals, the College of Policing candidate handbook, and your force examinations officer.
Where the syllabus comes from
The topic tree is taken from Appendix A of the NPPF Step Two candidate handbook (2026), cross-referenced to the Blackstone's Police Manuals 2026, Volumes 1–3. Section 1.8 (Weapons) applies to the sergeants' paper only.
